AKRON, OH – A late-night Uber ride in Akron turned violent when a driver was shot multiple times by a rider, leaving her seriously wounded but alive, authorities said.

Police responded to reports of gunfire around 9:30 p.m. on July 17 in the 500 block of Sanford Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a 39-year-old woman, who worked as an Uber driver, suffering from six gunshot wounds to her abdomen and arm.

The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she survived her injuries and was listed in stable condition.

Investigators determined that the attack occurred while the driver was transporting two men. During the ride, one of the passengers allegedly pulled out a gun and fired at the driver before both suspects fled the scene on foot. Investigators have not indicated whether any confrontation took place prior to the shooting.

Witnesses in the neighborhood reported hearing gunfire but said they did not see the actual shooting. One neighbor called 911 after noticing the victim lying on the ground outside.

Authorities identified the suspected shooter as Jaiden Palmer, 18. After several days of searching, members of the U.S. Marshals Service’s Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force apprehended Palmer on Shaw Avenue on July 24.

Palmer has been charged with felonious assault and aggravated robbery and is currently held in the Summit County Jail.

There has been no word on the second suspect or whether any arrests or warrants have been issued in connection with the other rider. The investigation remains ongoing.

Akron police have emphasized the broader dangers facing rideshare drivers following the incident. Officials are urging rideshare workers to stay vigilant and to report any unusual or suspicious customer behavior.

Authorities have not released the victim’s name, but say she is expected to recover from her injuries. Police continue to seek additional information that could assist in identifying or locating the second suspect.
