PITTSBURGH, PA – A 13-year-old Louisiana girl was rescued from a basement in Pittsburgh this week after authorities say she endured days of abuse at the hands of a man she met online. The teen’s harrowing journey, which spanned several states and involved multiple adults, has renewed warnings about the risks minors face on social media platforms.

Investigators allege that Ki-Shawn Crumity, 26, lured the victim under false pretenses after the two connected through Snapchat. Promising she would be adopted by a “trusted adult,” Crumity allegedly convinced the girl to travel more than 1,000 miles to his Pennsylvania home. There, police say, he kept her concealed in a basement inside a box under a sheet and subjected her to repeated sexual assaults.

According to law enforcement, the girl’s trip began in Louisiana before she was driven to Georgia by an adult man. After a stop in Georgia, she journeyed alone by Greyhound bus to Washington, D.C., and eventually to Pittsburgh, all as part of a plan orchestrated by Crumity and his alleged accomplices.

The ordeal was uncovered on October 30, when the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Special Victims Unit received a tip from the United States Marshals Service regarding the missing teen’s possible location. Acting on a federal search warrant, members of the Pittsburgh SWAT team entered a residence on Davis Avenue in the Brighton Heights neighborhood and located the girl in the basement, hidden from view.

The victim, who had been reported missing the previous week, told detectives she had been coerced with alcohol and marijuana edibles while being sexually assaulted multiple times each day. Authorities credited her recovery to persistent tracking of her digital activity, which eventually led investigators to the Pennsylvania home.

Crumity was arrested at the scene and faces a series of charges, including trafficking in individuals, statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault, and furnishing alcohol to a minor. Officials say he is one of three people implicated in the crimes. He has been denied bail and is currently in custody in Allegheny County.

At least one other suspect, Ronald Smith, 62, of New Orleans, was apprehended in Georgia. Smith faces charges of simple kidnapping and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile in connection with his alleged role in transporting the victim.

The case has shaken the local community, with neighbors recalling the tense law enforcement operation that unfolded outside Crumity’s residence. Witnesses described watching officers enter the home and emerge with the young victim, expressing both shock and relief over her recovery.

Officials have highlighted the case as a stark example of the hazards of online interactions, particularly for children and teenagers. They have urged parents and guardians to monitor digital communication and to remain vigilant about the content and contacts their children encounter online.

Authorities continue to investigate the broader trafficking network that may have facilitated the girl’s cross-country journey, as well as the involvement of additional individuals.
