PHILADELPHIA, PA – A Philadelphia man stands accused of murdering his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter, after police say the toddler was found unresponsive and showing signs of severe physical abuse in the basement of a South Philadelphia home.
Sean Hernandez, 21, was arrested and charged with murder and several related offenses following the death of Key’Monnie Bean. Authorities say the incident unfolded on Dec. 8 at a residence on the 2100 block of South Beechwood Street, where patrol officers discovered the young child with extensive injuries to her body. She was rushed to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, but doctors were unable to save her life.
Investigators allege that Hernandez beat and suffocated the child before leaving her in the basement. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s office confirmed Hernandez faces charges including endangering the welfare of a child, possession of an instrument of crime, reckless endangerment, and obstruction of justice.
Two additional adults who were in the home at the time, 21-year-old Anthony Lowrie and 20-year-old Alycia McNeill, have also been charged with obstruction of justice. Authorities accuse both of providing false information to investigators in the aftermath of the fatal assault.
While the child’s mother was reportedly present during the incident, she has not been charged as of Thursday. Officials stated that the investigation regarding her potential involvement remains ongoing.
At a recent press briefing, prosecutors outlined evidence suggesting the abuse Key’Monnie suffered may have occurred not just on the day of her death, but possibly over a longer period. Officials also indicated that objects may have been used during the assault, and preliminary findings suggest the child was suffocated.
Assistant District Attorney Ashley Toczylowski described the severity of Key’Monnie’s injuries, citing both the extent of the beating and indications of airway compromise consistent with suffocation. Authorities have not disclosed the specific timeline or who alerted police to the scene.
District Attorney Larry Krasner became visibly emotional while addressing the case, calling for public outrage in response to the toddler’s death. He emphasized the gravity of the crime and the need for accountability.
The child’s father, Ta’Shaun Walls, expressed anger and grief in an interview distributed by the district attorney’s office, calling for the harshest penalty possible for Hernandez. Walls also criticized the girl’s mother, claiming she witnessed the abuse and did not intervene.
Hernandez is being held without bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on January 5, 2026. The investigation remains active as authorities continue to examine the involvement of others present in the home.
