Salem, Oregon — Novo Nordisk has launched the first oral form of its GLP-1 weight-loss medication, Wegovy, in the United States, marking a significant step in the obesity treatment landscape. This new pill, approved by U.S. health officials late last year, arrives at a lower price compared to its injectable counterparts, igniting a competitive price shift in the pharmaceutical sector.
The Wegovy pill, which mimics the GLP-1 hormone to curb appetite, is now available for purchase at over 70,000 pharmacies across the country, including major chains like CVS and Costco. Patients can purchase the starting dose of 1.5 mg for $149 a month, making it more financially accessible to those who do not have insurance coverage. The 4 mg dose will be listed at the same monthly price until mid-April before increasing to $199.
Analysts suggest that the lower-than-anticipated pricing could attract many of the estimated 100 million Americans grappling with obesity. Matt Weston, a pharmaceutical analyst, noted that prices for injection-based treatments can reach $1,000 a month or more, contrasting sharply with Wegovy’s oral formulation. The potential increase in patient adherence is also anticipated due to the pill’s convenience, eliminating the need for injections.
Novo Nordisk, known for its success with injectable versions of Wegovy and Ozempic for obesity and diabetes, respectively, is seeking to recapture market share amid intense competition from rivals like Eli Lilly. Recent market fluctuations have seen Novo’s shares rise over 4% following Wegovy’s launch, though they remain down by nearly 44% over the past year due to fierce competition.
The affordability and accessibility of Wegovy have prompted other major players, including Eli Lilly, to rethink their pricing strategies. Both companies have reduced their cash prices for injectable options in an effort to stay competitive. Eli Lilly is also in the process of developing its own oral weight-loss medication and has indicated plans to cap prices for its products.
This innovative medication has garnered attention from healthcare providers and patients alike. Ed Cinca, senior vice president of marketing and patient solutions at Novo Nordisk, expressed optimism about the Wegovy pill’s potential impact, stating that it may offer an effective solution for those who have been waiting for a suitable weight-loss treatment.
Currently, the oral form of Wegovy has only been approved in the U.S. However, Novo Nordisk is in discussions with the UK’s medicines regulatory authority regarding its approval in the United Kingdom, with a decision expected later this year.
By diversifying its weight-loss offerings, Novo Nordisk aims not only to enhance patient experience but also to stabilize its position in a rapidly evolving market. The launch of Wegovy could redefine treatment options for obesity, particularly for those seeking an easier and more affordable path to weight management.
