WASHINGTON, D.C. – A security officer and member of the Army Reserves pleaded guilty this week to charges related to a plot to murder employees of the FBI in connection with the January 6th Capitol riot. Austin Carter, 26, admitted to conspiring with his co-defendant, Edward Kelley, to kill FBI personnel by providing a list of agents for a witness to memorize and burn.
The court filing from December revealed that Kelley provided a list of about 37 names of law enforcement personnel who worked on his own Jan. 6 case, including those present when he was arrested. Kelley, an anti-abortion activist, was initially arrested in May 2022 for his involvement in breaching the Capitol on January 6th, where video showed him using a piece of wood to breach a window and enabling other rioters to enter the building.
Kelley and Carter were arrested in connection with the alleged murder plot last December, and a jury trial for Kelley is scheduled for January. Meanwhile, Carter is facing a potential sentence of up to 120 months in prison. The Capitol riot saw about 1,200 people charged and an additional 1,000 suspects identified but not yet charged. The statute of limitations for most crimes committed that day expires in early 2026.
Carter’s guilty plea is one of many in the fallout from the Capitol riot, as law enforcement continues to bring those responsible to justice. The case sheds light on the gravity of the events on January 6th and the repercussions that are still being felt throughout the legal system. The guilty plea also serves as a sobering reminder of the seriousness and consequences of engaging in acts of violence against law enforcement and government buildings, especially in the context of political protests or demonstrations.
