SUMTER, SC – Authorities in Sumter County have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the deaths of two women whose bodies were discovered last month in a remote clearing, reigniting community concerns over violent crime in the region.

Tiamo Drakeford faces multiple charges, including two counts of murder, possession of a firearm during a violent crime, and desecration of human remains, officials said. The arrest follows an intense investigation that began after the tragic discovery along Richbow Road, an isolated stretch of land about 10 miles outside the city limits.

The case began unfolding on the afternoon of August 8 when a local property owner came across the bodies of Christine McAbee, 35, and Kristen Grissom, 38, while checking the property. Investigators said preliminary evidence suggested the victims were killed elsewhere and later left in the clearing, as their bodies appeared “placed” in the area rather than hastily abandoned.

Authorities believe the women had been deceased for at least a day before they were found, though exact timelines are being established through ongoing forensic analysis. The sheriff’s office said the condition in which the bodies were left played a crucial role in the investigation, pointing to efforts by the suspect or suspects to conceal or stage the scene.

An autopsy determined that McAbee died from a gunshot wound, providing detectives with their first firm clue into the nature of the crime. Grissom’s autopsy, in contrast, did not reveal signs of physical trauma, and her cause of death remains pending while toxicology tests are completed, officials confirmed.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis noted that while both women appeared to have known each other, the depth or circumstances of their relationship has yet to be clarified.
