CULLMAN, AL – A veteran attorney in Cullman faces a series of serious charges after prosecutors allege she repeatedly tried to poison her husband by lacing his food and drinks with fentanyl over the course of several weeks.
Sara Baker, 74, who has practiced law for decades with a specialty in criminal defense and family law, is accused of planning and carrying out three attempts to kill her husband in September, according to court documents. Authorities say the attempts occurred while Baker served as her husband’s primary caregiver, following a stroke he suffered several years ago.
Investigators allege Baker began plotting her husband’s death in early September, meeting with at least one other individual about how to carry out the crime. The first poisoning attempt reportedly took place on Sept. 4, with subsequent incidents on Sept. 12 and Sept. 20. Prosecutors claim Baker administered fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, to her husband without his knowledge or consent, causing him physical impairment but not death.
Court records state that Baker “put a substance she believed to be fentanyl in his food and/or drink” during the three separate incidents. The complaint also accuses her of conspiring with others to use the drug for a purpose “other than lawful medical or therapeutic treatment.”
A co-defendant, identified as Felisha Nichole Cofield, allegedly played a role in the case as well. According to the indictment, Cofield attempted to eliminate physical evidence by consuming fentanyl herself in an effort to prevent investigators from linking her to the poisonings. She was later charged with evidence tampering and named as a witness in the ongoing criminal proceedings.
At the time of the alleged offenses, Baker was also serving as defense counsel for Cofield in an unrelated criminal case. It remains unclear whether Cofield was the individual with whom Baker allegedly conspired to obtain the fentanyl.
Despite suffering adverse health effects from the alleged poisonings, Baker’s husband survived. The couple, married for nearly three decades, had recently celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary in August, with Baker posting affectionate messages about her husband on social media just weeks before the suspected crimes.
Law enforcement detained Baker in late November, and she is currently being held at the Cullman County Detention Center. Authorities say she faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, elder abuse, and domestic violence. A bond hearing has yet to be scheduled.
Prosecutors allege the acts constituted deliberate attempts to bring about her husband’s unconsciousness or physical injury by secretly administering a dangerous drug.
Baker’s arrest has shocked both the local legal community and longtime acquaintances, with some expressing disbelief that a respected figure with years of courtroom experience would stand accused of such acts. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of involvement by any additional parties.
No additional details have been released about the husband’s current medical condition. The case remains ongoing as officials prepare for the next stage of legal proceedings.
