PORTLAND, OR – An Oregon man, Pablo Figueroa, 62, has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison following a violent robbery attempt that left his victim stabbed 15 times. The incident began after Figueroa traced the victim home from a Portland bar where the victim had won $2,000 on a video lottery game.

In Multnomah County Circuit Court, Judge Benjamin Souede sentenced Figueroa to five years and 10 months in a state facility for second-degree assault, first-degree burglary, and attempting to commit a Class A felony. Figueroa’s plea deal saw multiple other serious charges, such as attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon, dropped.

Court records detail how the event unfolded last year on August 18. The victim was celebrating his lottery win at Montana’s Bar located on Southeast Stark Street. The celebration turned dangerous when Figueroa engaged the winner in conversation and later discreetly followed him to his residence at the Wy’East Plaza Apartments.

Surveillance footage showed Figueroa slipping in through the building’s security door just before it closed. Once the victim reached his apartment, Figueroa forced his way inside, according to reports. After tackling the victim and demanding cash, Figueroa, still unsatisfied, used a pocketknife to inflict multiple stab wounds and left the victim critically injured.

Remarkably, the victim played dead, which he believes saved his life. After the attack, he regained consciousness to the unexpected sound of snoring and discovered that Figueroa had fallen asleep at the crime scene. Taking advantage of the situation, the victim managed to escape and alert authorities.

Portland police, utilizing surveillance and a search, found Figueroa hiding in the building’s garbage room, sullied in blood and clutching $624. The knife used in the attack was discovered concealed in litter nearby. Figueroa’s past criminal record further complicated his case, revealing outstanding warrants and prior convictions of identity theft and failure to report as a sex offender.

During the court proceedings, the victim recalled the terrifying moment of sharing a space with his attacker, stating that Figueroa could have left with the money but chose to stay out of malice. His courtroom testimony, summarizing the ordeal, highlighted the gravity of the crime that shook the local community.
