CEDAR SPRINGS, MI – A chilling tragedy has upended a quiet Michigan community, as a mother once praised for her resilience in the face of her infant daughter’s rare illness now stands accused of the child’s murder.

Irene Aiyana Whitehead, 27, was arrested last week and faces charges of first-degree murder and first-degree child abuse in connection with the death of her young daughter, Ryleigh. Whitehead was taken into custody months after authorities were called to her Cedar Springs home on September 3, where first responders found her toddler unresponsive and not breathing. Despite attempts to revive her, Ryleigh was pronounced dead at the scene. Police noted that Whitehead was home alone with her daughter at the time of the incident.

What began as an apparent medical mystery quickly unraveled into a criminal investigation. Records indicate that Whitehead not only admitted to suffocating Ryleigh with a bag but also made startling revelations regarding the death of her son, Leonard, who died two years ago at just two months old. At the time, Leonard’s passing was attributed to complications from a parainfluenza virus—a diagnosis now being reconsidered by investigators in light of Whitehead’s confession.

During a police interview, Whitehead allegedly provided investigators with a signed statement reading, “I killed them,” referring to both of her children. Authorities recounted that she described her actions in harrowing detail, claiming she resorted to suffocation multiple times, culminating in Ryleigh’s death earlier this year.

Detectives pressed her about her intentions, to which she reportedly responded that she wanted her daughter to die “so she wouldn’t be here anymore.” Whitehead described feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of parenthood, admitting she “couldn’t take it anymore” and “just wanted it to stop.” Investigators now believe neither Ryleigh nor Leonard ever suffered from the illnesses initially listed on their death certificates.

As the investigation deepened, evidence emerged to support the accusations. Police obtained a video recorded less than a month before Ryleigh’s death that allegedly showed one of Whitehead’s surviving children making disturbing accusations toward their mother, saying, “you never even wanted me,” and, “you only want me to die.” The recording ends with the child pleading, “just kill me already.”

Court documents also reveal that in the days following Ryleigh’s death, Whitehead conducted online searches about whether suffocation by bag in a toddler could be detected as the cause of death. Although the medical examiner’s initial autopsy could not conclusively determine Ryleigh’s cause of death, asphyxia was said to be a possibility, and officials have indicated plans to update the manner of death to homicide given the new evidence.

Authorities further questioned Whitehead’s motives and the timeline of her decisions. When a detective asked when she first intended to harm her daughter, Whitehead reportedly confessed it was “right after she was born.” This admission prompted investigators to re-examine the circumstances of Leonard’s death in 2021, which prosecutors now say could potentially lead to additional charges.

What makes the unfolding case all the more jarring is Whitehead’s previously public stance. Just months earlier, she appeared to advocate for vigilance and maternal intuition, recounting her children’s medical struggles and sharing guidance for other parents. In an interview last September, she stressed the importance of trusting “your gut instinct” when it comes to a child’s health.

Whitehead is currently being held on a $5 million bond in the Kent County Jail. She is expected to appear in court for her next hearing on December 10.
