Los Angeles, California — Samsung has announced the launch of its newest portable projector, the Freestyle Plus, which boasts an output of 430 ISO lumens, nearly doubling the brightness of its predecessor. However, this specification has raised eyebrows, particularly since both earlier models were rated at 550 lumens in their specifications.
Projector manufacturers often face scrutiny over their lumen ratings, a situation that has led to legal challenges in the industry. Companies including Anker, Yaber, AAXA, Xgimi, AWOL Vision, and Dr. J have recently been compelled to revise their brightness claims to reflect standard ISO lumens. This push for accuracy is crucial, as a reliable lumen measurement can significantly influence a consumer’s decision, especially regarding performance in various lighting environments.
The design of the Freestyle Plus retains many elements from the original 1080p Freestyle projector launched in 2022. It features a rotating barrel design and an integrated speaker while maintaining its ability to stream popular services via Wi-Fi. New enhancements include automatic keystone correction, focus adjustments, and screen fitting, as well as an innovative capability to calibrate images based on wall colors and patterns. Notably, the device lacks a built-in battery, but it can be paired with compatible power banks for added portability.
Despite interest in its features, Samsung has yet to disclose key details such as the projector’s specifications, pre-order dates, or price in the lead-up to the Consumer Electronics Show. The original Freestyle projector attracted criticism for its pricing, initially set at $899, a figure many deemed excessive even before recent economic fluctuations.
In a market where options abound, consumers are likely to weigh the latest claims against previous experiences and emerging competitors. As the CES show approaches, expectations for Samsung’s offerings continue to build amid a backdrop of evolving technology and consumer demands in the projection landscape. Tech enthusiasts will be keen to see how the Freestyle Plus measures up against its rivals, particularly in terms of value and performance.
