Charlotte, North Carolina- A child psychiatrist in Charlotte has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the sexual exploitation of a minor and using artificial intelligence to create child pornography images of minors. David Tatum, 41, was also ordered to pay restitution and a special assessment totaling $99,000 under the Amy, Vicky, and Andy Child Pornography Victim Assistance Act (AVAA). After his release, Tatum will be required to register with the Sex Offender Registry Board in any state or jurisdiction where he works or resides.
Tatum, who was convicted of one count of production of child pornography, one count of transportation of child pornography, and one count of possession of child pornography, used his position as a child psychiatrist to secretly record minors undressing and showering. He even used AI to digitally alter clothed images of minors to make them sexually explicit.
U.S. Attorney Dena King for the western district of North Carolina highlighted the devastating impact of Tatum’s actions on the victims and emphasized the importance of prosecuting predators who exploit technology to harm children. The FBI Charlotte Field Office described Tatum’s actions as inconceivable, especially given his position as a doctor entrusted to help children through difficult mental health situations.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The FBI investigated the case, and Tatum is currently in federal custody, awaiting transfer to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
The sentencing of Tatum underscores the efforts to bring justice to child victims and sends a strong message that those who engage in such heinous acts will be held accountable. The case serves as a reminder of the need for continued vigilance in combating the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
