LINCOLN, Neb. — In a thrilling contest on Tuesday night, Purdue emerged victorious against Nebraska, clinching an 80-77 overtime win thanks to a last-second basket from Oscar Cluff. The game was a rollercoaster, as the Boilermakers initially held a commanding 20-point lead before facing an intense comeback from the Cornhuskers.
Purdue set a rapid pace from the beginning, swiftly jumping to a 14-1 lead as they knocked down four three-pointers before the first media timeout. Their defense stifled Nebraska’s offensive efforts, creating a significant early gap that seemed insurmountable.
The Boilermakers dominated the rebounding battle, registering 10 second-chance points in the first half alone. With some strong performances from Trey Kaufman-Renn and Cluff, Purdue out-rebounded Nebraska by 17 boards overall, which played a critical role in their strategy.
“We had 20 more possessions than them, and we needed all of them,” Purdue head coach Matt Painter said, emphasizing the importance of their relentless drive.
Nebraska, however, refused to back down. Fueled by an impressive 18-2 run in the second half, the Cornhuskers chipped away at Purdue’s lead, bringing it down to just five points with under seven minutes remaining. In response, Purdue found critical three-point shots from CJ Cox and Jack Benter, briefly stabilizing their position.
As the game wore on, Purdue struggled at the free-throw line, hitting only 11 of their 20 attempts. Missed opportunities there loomed heavy as the clock wound down, forcing the game into overtime after regulation ended in a tie.
In the extra period, Cluff’s decisive basket with just 5.2 seconds to spare sealed the deal for the Boilermakers. A crucial turnover by Nebraska shortly thereafter allowed Purdue to escape with a hard-fought victory. Cluff reflected on the moment, stating, “Once I saw Fletch get stuck, I knew he would look for me, and I was ready to catch it.”
Fletcher Loyer led the team with 18 points, followed closely by Braden Smith, who contributed 13 points along with 10 assists and eight rebounds. Kaufman-Renn’s 19 rebounds and Cluff’s 14 were significant in helping the team maintain their advantage on the court.
Purdue set a new school record during the game, attempting 46 three-pointers and besting the previous high of 36. While they managed to hit only 13, a total of 28.3 percent accuracy, Loyer’s 17 attempts placed him just behind Carsen Edwards’ record for most attempts in a single game.
“The second half was tough for us shooting-wise, but our guys never stopped fighting,” Painter added, highlighting the resilience displayed by his players.
Looking ahead, Purdue will face Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Saturday. The Boilermakers previously defeated the Hawkeyes 69-61 in West Lafayette last month, setting the stage for another competitive matchup.
Cluff acknowledged the challenges ahead, saying, “This is just the beginning. We have an important stretch ahead and need to keep pushing all the way through April.”
