Lakanwal, who entered the U.S. through a resettlement program, is accused of carrying out this violent act on two National Guard members. Authorities also revealed that he was injured during the confrontation. In a recent virtual court appearance from his hospital bed, Lakanwal pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Trump has indicated that the federal government is pushing for the death penalty for Lakanwal, labeling the shooting an “act of terrorism.” The legal proceedings are ongoing, with a hearing set for January 14 to further address the charges against him.
