New York, N.Y. — The New York Jets have named Frank Reich as their new offensive coordinator after an extensive search that concluded with a familiar face from their past. Sources confirmed that Reich will step into the role following the dismissal of Tanner Engstrand, who served as the team’s offensive coordinator last season.
Reich’s hiring marks a significant moment in his career as it will be his first opportunity to lead an NFL offense since he was let go as head coach of the Carolina Panthers during the 2023 season. Both Greg Roman and Darrell Bevell were among the candidates interviewed for the position, but Reich emerged as the frontrunner. Additional virtual interviews were conducted with Lunda Wells and Ronald Curry as the Jets sought the right fit for their offensive strategy.
Jet’s head coach Aaron Glenn initiated a push for a seasoned offensive voice on his coaching staff. Initially, there were discussions about keeping Engstrand in the offensive coordinator position while shedding play-calling responsibilities. Glenn even reached out to former NFL coach Jon Gruden, but discussions did not lead to any interest from Gruden. Ultimately, Glenn’s vision and relationship with Reich helped seal the deal.
Reich, 64, has had a diverse coaching background that includes a prominent tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played a pivotal role in developing quarterback Carson Wentz and guiding the team to its Super Bowl victory. His experience extends back to coaching Philip Rivers during his time with the Los Angeles Chargers. Before joining the Jets, he held positions at Stanford and was set to continue as a senior adviser for the football program before accepting the Jets’ offer.
Glenn’s past relationship with Reich also played a crucial role in the decision. The duo were teammates on the Jets during a difficult 1996 season that saw the team struggle on the field. Now, three decades later, they find themselves back in the same organization, ready to tackle the current challenges facing the team.
While Reich’s appointment brings hope, the Jets still face significant hurdles. The team is currently without a starting quarterback and holds the second overall pick in the upcoming draft. Speculation suggests they might consider trading for Jacoby Brissett, previously coached by Reich, as the Jets weigh their options ahead of the draft.
Despite the uncertainty at the quarterback position, the Jets will welcome back star wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who is recovering from injuries. They also boast a solid offensive line. However, they may need to address gaps in their running back corps, as Breece Hall is set to enter free agency, and the tight end and wide receiver positions lack established talent.
The Jets’ offensive struggles in recent years underscore the need for change. No Jets offensive coordinator has lasted more than two seasons since Brian Schottenheimer served from 2006 to 2011, highlighting a pattern of instability that Reich will need to rectify.
As he steps into this new role, Reich’s commitment to developing quarterbacks and creating a positive team culture will be vital for revitalizing the Jets’ offense and setting a solid foundation for the season ahead.
