SAN DIEGO — A significant salmonella outbreak linked to August Egg Company has resulted in at least 79 reported illnesses across several states, prompting urgent health warnings from federal agencies. Among those affected, 21 individuals have been hospitalized, according to public health officials.
The outbreak has raised alarms, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that the actual number of infected individuals is likely much higher. Many cases go unreported because individuals often recover from salmonella without seeking medical attention. This illness, which can cause severe gastrointestinal distress, poses serious risks to vulnerable populations, such as young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
The CDC advises consumers to discard or return organic and cage-free brown eggs from August Egg Company that have been sold in nine states. These eggs feature specific sell-by dates and should not be consumed. The company has voluntarily recalled approximately 1.7 million dozen eggs potentially contaminated with the bacteria.
August Egg Company took immediate action upon discovering the contamination risk, diverting eggs from its processing facility to a specialized location where they are safely pasteurized. The recalled eggs were sold under various brands, including Clover, O Organics, and Simple Truth, and are distributed across California and Nevada, among other states.
The CDC’s investigation identified two groups of illnesses that are potentially linked to dining at the same establishments, where eggs formed part of the meals served. This connection signifies a broader concern regarding food safety practices in restaurants. In a separate update, San Diego health authorities reported 37 probable and confirmed cases of salmonella infection connected to a local dining venue, but the specific source remains under investigation.
Health officials urge the public to stay vigilant about food safety. Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, typically lasting less than a week. While most recover without complications, serious cases can result in hospitalization or even death, underscoring the importance of monitoring food sources.
Consumers checking their egg cartons are advised to look for the plant code numbers P-6562 or CA5330 on the packaging, which identify the potentially contaminated products. The FDA emphasizes the need for swift action to mitigate risks and protect public health.
As the investigation continues, health officials are working diligently to track additional cases and prevent further spread. Consumers are reminded to practice proper handling and cooking techniques to ensure food safety at home.
