Salmonella Outbreak Update: New Cucumber Recalls Issued, 70 People Ill – Check Your Fridge Now!

Washington, DC – Several companies have issued recalls of fresh cucumbers and products containing them following a recent salmonella outbreak. The Centers for Disease Control and Control (CDC) advised consumers to check for recalled items, including sushi, salads, wraps, and veggie trays with cucumbers, and to refrain from consuming them.

In response to the outbreak that affected multiple states, the CDC recommended washing items and surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled cucumbers using hot soapy water or a dishwasher. The agency provided a list of companies and products impacted by the outbreak on its website.

The latest update on the situation comes after shipments of cucumbers to the U.S. and Canada, as well as organic eggs sold in select Costco stores in the southern U.S., were recalled due to potential salmonella contamination. According to the CDC, nearly 70 individuals fell ill from the outbreak, with 18 requiring hospitalization across 19 states. Fortunately, there have been no reported deaths linked to the outbreak.

A distribution map released by the CDC indicated that cases were concentrated in Montana, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Texas, Massachusetts, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Utah, and Wyoming, among others. The CDC identified produce from Sonora, Mexico, grown by Agrotato S.A. as a potential source of the contamination.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recall, initiated on November 28, was associated with the outbreak. SunFed Produce, based in Arizona, recalled cucumbers sold between October 12 and November 26 following reports of associated illnesses. Consumers were urged to check with their point of purchase to determine if they had purchased affected produce.

Individuals experiencing symptoms such as diarrhea with fever, prolonged diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, excessive vomiting, or signs of dehydration were advised to seek medical attention. While most people recover from salmonella without treatment within a week, the FDA’s investigation into the outbreak remains ongoing.
