Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina has criticized fellow Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene for defending the leak of classified documents from the Pentagon. Greene, a freshman Representative from Georgia, has faced backlash for downplaying the severity of the leak and suggesting that the leaker was a whistleblower.
During a press conference on Monday, Graham called Greene’s comments “irresponsible” and said that the leaker should be held accountable for their actions. “There are people who are trying to do harm to our nation, and we need to get to the bottom of this and hold those responsible accountable,” he said.
Graham’s remarks came after Greene defended her previous statements during an appearance on Fox News last week. “I absolutely stand by what I said,” she said. “I believe that this person is a whistleblower and they should be protected.”
The leak in question involved a document outlining the Department of Defense’s plan to counteract Russian influence in the Middle East. According to reports, the document was leaked to a news outlet in the summer of 2019.
Greene, who has previously expressed support for conspiracy theories and controversial positions, has drawn criticism from both Democrats and Republicans since her election in November. Last month, she was stripped of her committee assignments after a number of incendiary statements came to light.
