Senator Dianne Feinstein was hospitalized on Monday with shingles, a painful viral infection that affects the nerves and skin. The California senator was admitted to the hospital in San Francisco, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Feinstein’s office released a statement saying that the senator had experienced a rash on her face, and was diagnosed with shingles by her physician. The statement added that the senator would be following her doctor’s advice and would be taking some time off to rest.

“I look forward to returning to the Senate and continuing my work on behalf of the people of California as soon as possible,” Feinstein said in the statement. “But for now, my focus is on my health and getting back to 100%.”

Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, and usually affects older adults or people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include pain, itching or burning sensations, and a rash.

The news of Feinstein’s hospitalization has prompted an outpouring of support from her colleagues, with many Democratic lawmakers wishing her a speedy recovery.

“I wish Senator Feinstein a quick recovery and hope to see her back in the Senate soon,” said Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader. “We need her leadership now more than ever.”
