ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) – Phillip Turner, 35, was sentenced on Wednesday for his conviction of attempted second-degree murder in connection to a shooting incident that took place on Christmas Eve, 2022. Turner was also found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The victim, 37-year-old Jessica Riedel, was left with severe injuries after being shot in the back of the head and requires constant care as a result of the incident.
During the sentencing, the judge ruled that the attempted murder charge took precedence over the assault charges. Turner was sentenced to a little over 18 years in prison for the 2nd-degree attempted murder charge, with the judge ordering that 2/3 of the sentence is to be served in prison and 1/3 on supervised release. Additionally, Turner was sentenced to five years for the firearm possession charge, to be served concurrently with the attempted murder sentence.
The shooting incident, which left Riedel with life-altering injuries, sparked outrage and concern within the community. The judge’s decision to prioritize the attempted murder charge reflects the severity of Turner’s actions and their impact on the victim’s life.
The sentencing of Phillip Turner serves as a reminder of the consequences of violent actions and the importance of upholding and enforcing laws related to firearm possession. Riedel’s ongoing need for care highlights the long-term effects of such violent incidents on victims and their families.
