Sentenced: Woman from Normal Gets 8 1/2 Years for Role in Fatal Police Shooting

URBANA, Ill. – A woman from Normal, Illinois, has been sentenced to 8 1/2 years in prison for her role in the shooting death of a Champaign police officer and the injury of another. Regina Lewis, 28, pleaded guilty to conspiring to purchase a semi-automatic pistol for Darion Lafayette, a convicted felon who was prohibited from owning a firearm. The firearm was used by Lafayette to shoot Champaign police officers Christopher Oberheim and Jeffrey Creel. Oberheim was killed, and Lafayette died in the exchange of gunfire on April 26, 2021.

Lewis admitted to falsely reporting the gun as stolen and continued the cover-up after Oberheim’s death. Her co-defendant, Ashantae Corruthers, was also involved in the scheme and will be sentenced on Feb. 12. During the sentencing, Oberheim’s wife and four daughters spoke, and the judge noted that federal sentencing guidelines recommended a shorter imprisonment period, but the severity of the offense allowed for a longer sentence.

The “straw purchase” made by Lewis highlights the dangers of individuals illegally obtaining firearms and the devastating consequences that can result from such actions. The sentencing serves as a reminder of the importance of enforcing firearm laws and holding individuals accountable for their illegal actions. The impact of the shooting on the families of the victims and the community at large cannot be understated, and the sentencing brings some closure to a tragic event that shook the city of Champaign.

In conclusion, Regina Lewis’ sentencing for her involvement in the shooting death of a Champaign police officer and the injury of another highlights the consequences of illegal firearm purchases and the impact of such actions on the community. The judge’s decision to impose a longer sentence than the federal guidelines recommend underscores the severity of the offense and the lasting effects of the tragic event.
