Serial Killer Search on Long Island Linked to New Suspect in 1993 Cold Case

Suffolk County, Long Island – A new search has recently been launched on Long Island, but it is not connected to suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann. Instead, investigators are focusing on another serial killer suspect in a case dating back to 1993.

Authorities are searching for evidence in the murder of Sandra Costilla, a 28-year-old woman from Queens who was brutally beaten and strangled in November 1993. The search, which began in Manorville on Long Island, has since shifted to North Sea, a hamlet within Southampton Town.

The main suspect in this case is John Bittrolff, a convicted murderer serving time for the killings of two other women on Long Island. Bittrolff was previously considered a suspect in Costilla’s murder but was never charged. However, police hope to link him to the 1993 crime through this new investigation.

Bittrolff, who is currently serving a 50-year to life sentence, was also a prime suspect in the infamous Gilgo Beach murders. Despite initial suspicions, Suffolk County prosecutors later confirmed that Bittrolff was not involved in those killings.

The Gilgo Beach case, known as the “Gilgo Four,” involves the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and Amber Costello. Rex Heuermann, who was charged with killing the four women, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The new investigations into Bittrolff and Heuermann come after Heuermann’s estranged wife expressed disbelief in his capacity to commit such crimes. Despite pending divorce proceedings, she visits him in jail weekly.

As the investigations continue, authorities are working diligently to uncover the truth behind these long-standing cases of violence and ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families.
