GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — The Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City is grappling with power outages in its intensive care unit and pediatric ward following heavy bombardment and fighting in its vicinity. The Palestinian health officials reported that two individuals, including an infant, have died at the hospital due to the lack of electricity. Dr. Marwan Abusada, a surgeon at the hospital, explained that doctors are still providing care using a battery system.
The hospital, which is operated by the Hamas-run Ministry of Health, is struggling to function effectively due to the power outages. Dr. Ashraf Al-Qudra, a spokesman for the Palestinian Ministry of Health, confirmed that the complex has also been affected by shortages of food and water. The lack of essential resources is limiting the hospital’s ability to care for patients.
Amid the ongoing intense fighting against Hamas in the vicinity of Al-Shifa hospital, Israeli military spokespersons indicated that soldiers were taking measures to mitigate harm to civilians. However, hospital workers are facing challenges in providing proper burials for the deceased, as it is too dangerous to leave the complex due to the ongoing military activities.
The World Health Organization has expressed extreme concern over the reports of strikes on the Al-Shifa hospital. The Director-General called for international humanitarian law to be respected and urged a humanitarian cease-fire to facilitate the delivery of essential medical services to those in need. Despite Israeli calls for evacuation, some patients are unable to leave the hospital, and medical staff are committed to providing care for them.
The Israeli military has alleged that Hamas militants are using hospitals as cover, an accusation Hamas and hospital workers have denied. Additionally, Israeli security officials have suggested that misfired projectiles from militant groups in Gaza have struck the hospital. This situation is leading to further insecurity and fear for the future of the hospital and its occupants.
As the conflict in Gaza continues, the Al-Shifa hospital is facing significant challenges in delivering medical care to those in need, raising concerns about the impact on civilian lives and the ability of health workers to fulfill their duties. So far, health officials in Gaza have reported more than 11,000 injuries, with the situation remaining precarious as the conflict persists.
