Hanover County, Virginia – New details from court documents shed light on the tragic events that unfolded at a party in Hanover County leading to the death of 16-year-old Matthew Devine. The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident involving the Colonial Heights High School student.
On April 6, at 10:46 p.m., deputies responded to a large party at Agape Lane and McClellan Road after receiving a parking complaint. While en route, reports of gunshots and a male with a gunshot wound to the chest emerged. Upon arrival, officers discovered Devine’s lifeless body parallel to the road, about 12 to 17 feet away from where he was shot.
An altercation between Devine and an unidentified individual in a blue hoodie escalated, leading to gunfire. Both parties were armed, with Devine pursuing the suspect to a driveway where the fatal shots were fired. The suspect fled, triggering panic among attendees, as Devine succumbed to his injuries.
Evidence collected from the crime scene included firearms found in vehicles, a bag matching the suspect’s description, and ammunition. A search warrant led to the discovery of various items, including firearms, cartridges, and personal belongings seized by the authorities.
James Rashawn Smith, 18, from Ashland, faced charges of second-degree murder, firearm use during a felony, concealed weapon possession, brandishing a firearm, and recklessly shooting at a building in connection to Devine’s death. Smith’s court proceedings were transferred to Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court due to Devine’s status as a juvenile.
Additionally, 18-year-old Jayvian Marrece Threatt from Petersburg was arrested for attempted murder and firearm use during a felony, for allegedly shooting at Smith. Threatt’s hearing is scheduled for June 21, 2024, at the General District Court.
The Hanover County community mourns the loss of Devine, as law enforcement continues to piece together the sequence of events leading to the tragic shooting. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work diligently to bring justice to the victim and accountability to those involved in the fatal incident.
