Bekkersdal, South Africa — A tragic shooting at a local pub left nine individuals dead and at least ten others injured in the early hours of Sunday. This latest gun violence event marks the second mass shooting in the country within a span of just three weeks, highlighting the pervasive issues of crime and gun violence in South Africa.

The incident took place around 1 a.m. at the KwaNoxolo tavern, located in the township approximately 46 kilometers west of Johannesburg. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of around 12 assailants in two vehicles—a white minibus and a silver sedan—descended upon the scene, indiscriminately firing at patrons before fleeing the area.

According to law enforcement officials, some victims were shot while in the streets, caught in the crossfire as the gunmen escaped. Among those deceased was a driver associated with an online ride-hailing service, who had been outside the establishment at the time of the attack.

In response to this shocking event, Major General Fred Kekana of the provincial police announced a manhunt for the suspects, escalating ongoing investigations into violent crime in the region. The Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigations unit is working alongside the Crime Detection Tracing Unit to secure justice.
