Shooting Outside Suburban Bar Over Pizza and Tab Results in First Degree Murder Charges

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) — First-degree murder charges have been filed against a man accused of fatally shooting another man outside a bar in Wheaton, Illinois.

The DuPage County State Attorney’s office announced on Saturday that Michael Freund, 49, is facing charges in the shooting death of Dexter Perkins. The incident took place outside Rosie O’Neill’s Irish Pub and Grub around 8:41 a.m. on Friday.

According to the State Attorney’s office, the shooting stemmed from an alleged argument over pizza and the bar tab between Freund, Perkins, and two other men. After a brief scuffle, Freund pulled out a 9mm handgun and fired two warning shots into the air. He then allegedly shot Perkins in the torso and face.

Investigators later found that Perkins did not know Freund or any of the other men involved in the incident. Perkins, a father of two children with a third on the way, was described as an innocent bystander.

Sheriff James Mendrick condemned the violence, particularly during the holiday season, and commended the deputies and the State’s Attorney for their work in ensuring that Freund will be brought to justice. Freund was denied pre-trial release and is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on January 18, 2024.

The shooting has left a community in shock and Perkins’ family mourning. The authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
