SOUTHPORT, N.C. — A shooting incident at a waterfront bar in Southport has left three people dead and at least eight others injured, according to city officials. The violence erupted Saturday night as a suspect on a boat fired shots at the American Fish Company, an outdoor venue popular among locals and tourists alike.
Authorities have identified the alleged shooter as 40-year-old Nigel Max Edge from Oak Island. He faces multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or seriously injure. Additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.
Edge reportedly claims to be a combat veteran who has sustained injuries leading to post-traumatic stress disorder, according to statements from law enforcement. The shooting, which began around 9:30 p.m., prompted an immediate response from police and other emergency services, leading to a swift evacuation of the area.
Five of the injured individuals remain hospitalized, with at least one in serious condition. Authorities are working to provide updates to the victims’ families as they navigate this tragic event.
In the wake of the shooting, the city advised residents to stay indoors through a notice on its social media channels, warning of an active shooter situation. Officials emphasized public safety, urging people to avoid the waterfront area until the situation was resolved.
Eyewitness accounts describe a frantic scene as gunfire rang out. ChyAnn Ketchum, the city’s public information officer, detailed how the shooter used a short-barrel AR rifle equipped with a suppressor, folding stock, and scope. After the initial attack, the suspect fled the scene, proceeding up the Intracoastal Waterway.
Shortly after the shooting, U.S. Coast Guard personnel spotted an individual matching the shooter’s description at a boat ramp in Oak Island. This led to a coordinated effort to apprehend Edge, whose first court appearance is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at the Brunswick County Courthouse.
Local community leaders have expressed their condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. Southport, a city of approximately 4,300 residents located near the mouth of the Cape Fear River, is grappling with the shock of such an event occurring in their usually peaceful town.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are reminding the public to report any information related to the incident, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in the pursuit of justice.
