Shooting Spree Suspect Allegedly Murdered Parents in San Antonio Before Austin Killings

San Antonio, Texas – Police revealed on Wednesday that the suspect in a deadly shooting spree in Central Texas had murdered his parents in San Antonio before carrying out the killings in Austin.

The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Shane James, went on a shooting rampage that resulted in six deaths and three injuries across five locations in San Antonio and Austin. James was arrested and charged with Capital Murder following the attacks.

The deadly spree began on Tuesday when an Austin ISD school district police officer was shot in the parking lot of Northeast Early College High School. The officer was injured but is expected to recover. Afterwards, a cyclist called 911 to report being shot in southwest Austin, with further shootings and a home invasion occurring throughout the day.

Following James’ arrest, authorities in San Antonio discovered the bodies of his parents, Phyllis and Shane, in what was described as a “grisly” scene. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar stated that it is believed the murders in San Antonio occurred before the suspect drove to Austin and carried out the subsequent attacks.

Court records revealed that James had a history of violence, including a previous charge of aggravated assault against his family members. He also reportedly cut off his ankle monitor in March of 2022, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events of the deadly spree and bring closure to the victims and their families. The three survivors, including the injured police officers and the bicyclist, continue to recover from their injuries.
