Shooting Suspect Linked to Vehicle Theft in Fort Pierce Gunfight, Police Investigating Other Fatalities

Fort Pierce, Florida – A deadly shootout between a man and Fort Pierce Police Department officers has been linked to a vehicle theft that occurred just before the fatal exchange of gunfire on Saturday morning. The man, identified as Bernard Smith, 28, is now under investigation for potential connections to three other shootings in the area.

During a Monday news conference, Maj. Michael Santiago of the FPPD described the events leading up to the fatal encounter as dynamic, fast-moving, and complex. Officers responded to two separate 911 calls reporting a shooting near North 24th Street and an automobile theft. The stolen vehicle was located near 24th Street, where gunfire erupted as officers were approaching the scene.

Smith was determined to be the individual firing shots, leading to a confrontation with the officers during which he was fatally shot. The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene, where two additional shooting victims were discovered deceased. One victim, originally reported in the 911 call, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

While it remains unclear if Smith was involved in the other shootings, Santiago highlighted his criminal history during the news conference, emphasizing the ongoing investigation into the tragic incidents. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation into Smith’s death, while the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.

As authorities continue to piece together the events of that fateful morning, questions linger regarding the motives behind the shootings and the potential connections between the incidents. The community awaits further updates as law enforcement agencies work diligently to uncover the truth behind the violent encounters.
