Sioux Falls Man Sentenced to 12 Years for Carjacking and Use of Firearm

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A 26-year-old man from Sioux Falls, South Dakota has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for his involvement in a conspiracy to commit carjacking and the use of a firearm during a violent crime. The sentencing, which took place on November 30, 2023, comes after Jose Uribe pleaded guilty to the charges on September 11, 2023.

Uribe was indicted after an incident on May 31, 2022, during which he and two others carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint and later fled from law enforcement. The case was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities by strengthening law enforcement efforts and fostering trust between communities and police.

The investigation into Uribe’s crimes was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Sioux Falls Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Connie Larson prosecuted the case, which ultimately led to Uribe being sentenced to 12 years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and a $200 fine to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences individuals face when engaging in violent crime and using firearms in the commission of those crimes. Uribe will now be remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to serve his sentence and contribute to the efforts to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
