Sisters Honored with Legacy Park at Cox Elementary School

SACHSE, TX – Cox Elementary School in Sachse, Texas, came together on Monday to remember two students tragically killed in a mass shooting at the Allen Outlet Mall in 2023. It was a somber day as the school community gathered to honor the lives of sisters Daniela, 11, and Sofia, 8, Mendoza, who were among the eight victims of the deadly rampage a year ago.

As the students and staff at Cox Elementary School commemorated the anniversary of the tragic event, memories of the Mendoza sisters were fondly shared. The school community came dressed in yellow, the girls’ favorite color, and released butterflies in their honor, symbolizing the sisters’ love for the delicate insects.

In addition to the emotional tribute, Cox Elementary School also broke ground for the future Mendoza Legacy Park on campus. The park, located at the front of the school, aims to celebrate the legacies of Daniela and Sofia Mendoza by embodying qualities of resilience, love, and unity.

The project to create Mendoza Legacy Park is being led by Stephanie Green, an ESL teacher who had a personal connection to one of the sisters. Green, along with community donations, is spearheading the effort to design a park that reflects the unique personalities of Daniela and Sofia. From a birdfeeder representing Daniela’s generosity to a free little library symbolizing Sofia’s passion for reading, the park is intended to be a lasting tribute to the sisters.

The school also provided comfort therapy dogs for students to interact with, offering a source of solace and support in the midst of their grief. Remembered for her infectious smile and generous spirit, Daniela was known for her kindness and thoughtfulness towards others. Sofia, described as a vibrant and unforgettable student by her teacher, brought joy and energy wherever she went.

Reflecting on the impact of the tragedy on the school community, teachers like Lauren Wright express their hope that Mendoza Legacy Park will serve as a place of solace and remembrance for everyone affected by the loss of Daniela and Sofia. The park is seen as a vital space where students and staff can come together to honor the memories of the two young girls, keeping their spirits alive in the hearts of those who knew them.
