HONOLULU, HI – A U.S. Army soldier has been formally charged in connection with the disappearance and presumed murder of his pregnant wife, who went missing from an Oahu military base last summer, authorities announced this week.
Mischa Mabeline Kaalohilani Johnson, 19, was last seen at her home on the Schofield Barracks on the night of July 31, 2024. Her absence was reported the following day, prompting an investigation. Her husband, Private First Class Dewayne Arthur Johnson II, was quickly apprehended on August 2 and placed in military confinement, military officials confirmed.
Initially, Dewayne Johnson faced charges related to obstruction of justice, false statements, and child pornography. These charges were connected to the investigation into Mischa Johnson’s disappearance. However, the situation escalated in November when the Army’s Office of Special Trial Counsel added allegations of murder, including charges of the intentional killing of their unborn child.
The charges against Johnson were formally referred under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), with five charges encompassing 19 specifications. The charges include murder, obstruction of justice, and multiple counts related to child pornography.
In a significant legal move, the defendant waived his right to an Article 32 hearing, which is equivalent to a civilian pretrial hearing. His case will now proceed to arraignment and additional hearings, culminating in a general court-martial.
Army investigators have indicated that Mischa Johnson is presumed dead, although her remains have not been recovered. The Army Criminal Investigation Division continues to seek the public’s assistance for any information that could further illuminate the case.
For Mischa Johnson’s family, the indictment brings a measure of relief. Her sister expressed a sense of betrayal, as Dewayne was welcomed into the family prior to the tragedy. Her comments highlighted both the family’s ongoing frustration and their hope for justice.
Details surrounding the investigation are limited, but reports have surfaced that Dewayne Johnson was seen on surveillance cameras purchasing suspicious items such as tools and cleaning supplies. Additionally, it has been disclosed that Mischa Johnson was expecting a baby girl at the time of her disappearance.
As the military legal proceedings prepare to advance, the victim’s family remains steadfast in seeking justice and plans to attend future court dates in person.
