Son shoots his teacher father in the driveway because his father wanted him to get a job

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL – A 25-year-old man is facing murder charges after authorities say he fatally shot his father during an argument about employment and financial responsibility outside his Port Charlotte home.

According to law enforcement officials, Melquan Stewart was arrested on Monday after his father, Glenn Stewart, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the driveway of the residence. First responders transported the older Stewart to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Court documents indicate the altercation began when Glenn Stewart arrived at his son’s home to confront him about finding employment and contributing to rent, which the father had reportedly been covering for the prior four months. Glenn Stewart also demanded to see documentation showing Melquan was working to obtain military paperwork, authorities reported.

As the father waited in the driver’s seat of his Volkswagen SUV, Melquan allegedly walked to the rear passenger door to put a bag inside. At that point, according to the arrest affidavit, the younger Stewart claimed he started hearing voices urging him to shoot his father.

Investigators said Melquan admitted to hearing such voices previously, but told police it was the first time he acted on them. He then fired multiple shots into the SUV through the rolled-down passenger window with a Ruger LC9 handgun, the affidavit states. Glenn Stewart attempted to flee by putting his vehicle in reverse.

Authorities allege Melquan then approached the vehicle, pulled his father onto the driveway, shot him again, and placed his arms over his chest, reportedly telling him that he loved him. After the shooting, Melquan briefly left the scene in the SUV, setting his GPS for Miami before changing his mind and returning to the site, documents show.

Neighbors had already contacted 911 after witnessing the incident and hearing gunshots. Responding deputies found Glenn Stewart lying in the driveway with apparent gunshot wounds largely concentrated on the right side of his body, surrounded by blood.

Melquan Stewart was taken into custody at the scene. Officers noted he had blood on his clothes and, according to authorities, he immediately told them he wanted to surrender, referencing the voices he had heard.

A black semiautomatic handgun was recovered from the vehicle, and investigators also documented blood stains inside and outside the SUV.

Melquan Stewart appeared before a judge on Monday and remains in custody without bond. A subsequent court hearing is set for Thursday as the investigation into the deadly altercation continues.
