Sony Secures Binding Agreement with Microsoft to Preserve Call of Duty on PlayStation

Sony and Microsoft have signed a binding agreement to keep the popular Call of Duty series available on PlayStation gaming consoles. The deal comes as Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the maker of Call of Duty, is set to close. Previously, there were concerns that Microsoft’s dominance in the gaming market could lead to exclusivity for its own consoles, sidelining Sony. The agreement between Sony and Microsoft alleviates those concerns, although the specific duration of the deal has not been disclosed.

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer announced the agreement on Twitter, stating, “We are pleased to announce that Microsoft and PlayStation have signed a binding agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.” The deal ensures that the popular game franchise will continue to be available on PlayStation consoles, providing reassurance for Sony and its gamers.

The acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft has faced regulatory scrutiny due to concerns over potential anti-competitive effects. Critics worried that Microsoft’s control over both the Xbox console and the Call of Duty series could lead to limited options for consumers and hinder competition in the gaming market.

Despite the agreement between Sony and Microsoft, the acquisition of Activision Blizzard is not yet certain to close. However, a federal appeals judge recently denied the Federal Trade Commission’s request to temporarily block the deal. This decision has improved the prospects for Microsoft and Activision.

In May, regulators in the European Union approved the deal, and the Competition and Markets Authority in the UK has expressed willingness to negotiate the terms of the acquisition with Microsoft. Both companies aim to complete the transaction by July 18.

Overall, the binding agreement between Sony and Microsoft regarding the Call of Duty series on PlayStation consoles provides reassurance for gamers and helps address concerns about potential anti-competitive effects. As the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft progresses, the gaming industry will be closely watching the outcome and its impact on the market.
