South Fork Fire Update: 5,252 Acres Burning with Zero Containment – Urgent Evacuations in Place!

Ruidoso, New Mexico – The South Fork Fire and the Salt Fire have ignited on Mescalero tribal land, US Forest Service land, and the surrounding area of Ruidoso. Managed by Mescalero Apache Fire Rescue and Bureau of Indian Affairs, both fires have prompted the deployment of Complex Incident Management Teams.

The South Fork Fire, currently estimated at 5,252 acres with zero percent containment, poses a significant threat with multiple structures at risk and an unknown number already lost. Rapid fire growth and extreme behavior have been observed since its discovery on Monday, June 17, 2024. A Complex Incident Management Team is set to take over the situation tomorrow.

Weather conditions, including 79 degrees with 11% humidity and winds reaching 18 mph with gusts of 25 mph, continue to challenge firefighting efforts. The Village of Ruidoso remains under mandatory evacuation, prompting road closures and the establishment of evacuation centers for both people and animals.

Meanwhile, the Salt Fire in Mescalero Reservation, Otero County, southwest of Ruidoso spans approximately 2,815 acres with containment efforts still at zero percent. Evacuation orders for specific areas remain in effect overnight, with resources from various agencies like BIA, Mescalero, and US Forest Service mobilized to combat the active fire.

Residents sensitive to wildfire smoke are urged to take precautions, and evacuation centers are made available for those in need of shelter in the midst of the raging fires.
