Cape Canaveral, Florida — The U.S. Space Force, in collaboration with SpaceX, successfully launched the X-37B spacecraft, a Boeing-built vehicle resembling a mini space shuttle, during a late-night mission on Thursday, August 21, 2025. The uncrewed spacecraft was sent into orbit atop a Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center, marking another step in ongoing efforts to expand military capabilities and experimental technologies in space.
Lift-off occurred at 11:50 p.m. EDT from Launch Pad 39-A, and the first-stage booster achieved a sixth successful trip, landing back at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. This maneuver created audible sonic booms across parts of Central Florida, an impressive reminder of the rocket’s power and reach.
This mission, designated USSF-36, is the 70th orbital launch from the Space Coast in 2025, with SpaceX responsible for the majority of those missions. The X-37B, measuring nearly 29 feet with a wingspan of 14 feet, continues to demonstrate versatility and technological advancements. It has been airborne in various missions since its debut in 2010, now logging more than 4,200 days in space through multiple flights.
In a notable difference from the retired space shuttle program, which featured 184-foot long vehicles, the X-37B can fit within standard rocket fairings. To date, it has launched on five United Launch Alliance Atlas V rockets, one Falcon 9, and once on Falcon Heavy, showcasing its adaptability across different launch vehicles.
The Space Force has not disclosed the exact duration of this mission, referred to as OTV-8. However, its predecessor, OTV-7, embarked on an extensive mission, remaining in orbit for over 434 days before returning to Earth. During its last flight in May 2020, the X-37B spent more than 908 days in space, underscoring its capacity for long-duration operations.
While much about the X-37B’s payload remains classified, the mission is designed to test technologies crucial for extended missions and to return findings safely. Among the announced payloads is a collaboration with the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office, exploring next-generation laser communications. This evolving method aims to surpass traditional radio transmissions in reliability, security, and data capacity.
The mission also features what the Defense Innovation Unit describes as “the highest performing quantum inertial sensor tested in space.” This technology aims to navigate accurately without GPS reliance, crucial for operations in areas such as cislunar space, which lies between Earth and the moon.
Commanding the operation, Space Force officials expressed optimism that the outcomes of this mission would bolster the resilience and reliability of U.S. satellite communications. The advancement of laser communications is expected to constitute a key enhancement for military and potentially civilian networks.
Recent challenges faced by Boeing in other projects, including budget overruns and delays with the Starliner and Artemis Space Launch System initiatives, stand in contrast to the X-37B’s continued success. Boeing representatives emphasize that each flight of the X-37B has opened doors to new experiments and innovation.
As the mission proceeds, the Space Force anticipates analyzing the data retrieved from the spacecraft, heralding a new chapter in military space operations and technological advancement. The X-37B stands poised not only as a vehicle for exploration but as a significant contributor to the future of resilience and adaptability in space missions.
