Tehran, Iran – As protestors took to the streets, demanding change, Elon Musk made headlines by offering free Starlink internet services to support their cause. This initiative quickly gained attention as the Iranian government responded by cutting off internet access throughout the country, marking the first nationwide blackout since 2019. The shutdown severely hindered traditional communication methods, leaving only Starlink as a crucial lifeline for demonstrators to share updates and images with a global audience.

However, the Iranian regime did not take long to retaliate. It initiated a crackdown on Starlink terminals, labeling users as “terrorists.” Military-grade jamming devices were deployed with the goal of obstructing the service and stifling communication among protestors. Reports have emerged that SpaceX engineers are actively working to counteract these jamming efforts to help restore connectivity for those in need.

Estimates suggest that nearly 50,000 Starlink terminals are currently in use in Iran, smuggled into the country since the service was launched in 2022. Despite governmental restrictions, these devices have provided a means for many to bypass state controls, connecting them to the broader world. The Iranian authorities have found it difficult to jam Starlink signals; however, they have reportedly succeeded in slowing down connections to make them almost unusable.

Experts believe that the Iranian regime is utilizing technology sourced from Russia or China to enhance its jamming capabilities. While SpaceX’s network remains resilient, challenges persist. Although smartphones manufactured since 2022 possess the technology to connect directly to Musk’s satellites, the infrastructure is not yet fully capable of handling a large-scale response for Internet access. Local operators currently offer the so-called “direct to cell” connections; however, it remains unclear when or if Musk’s company will fully enable this service for the Iranian populace.

Amidst the turmoil, the international community watches closely. The U.S. Embassy has advised Americans in Iran to consider leaving the country via land routes to Armenia or Turkey, signaling heightened concerns over escalating tensions.
