Stefanski Out: Shocking Move as Cleveland Browns Pursue Coaching Reconstruction Amid Turbulent Season

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns have parted ways with head coach Kevin Stefanski following a disappointing run the past two seasons. Team ownership expressed deep appreciation for his contributions over the past six years, highlighting both his coaching acumen and personal qualities.

In a statement, Managing and Principal Partners Dee and Jimmy Haslam recognized Stefanski’s leadership, stating that there was gratitude for his dedication and hard work. However, the team concluded that a change was essential after the lackluster recent results. They emphasized their commitment to rebuilding the franchise, aiming to provide fans with a winning team. Andrew Berry will spearhead the search for Stefanski’s successor as he continues to oversee football operations.

Stefanski initially took the reins in January 2020 and quickly made an impact, guiding the Browns to their first playoff appearance in nearly two decades. Under his leadership, the team achieved 11 wins, the most by a first-year head coach in franchise history and one of the highest tallies recorded by any rookie coach that year. His tenure included two playoff berths and back-to-back 11-win seasons, distinguishing him alongside the legendary Paul Brown as one of the few coaches to mark multiple successful seasons with the team.

The two-time recipient of the Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award, Stefanski also made a significant mark on Browns history. Winning the award in both 2020 and 2023, he became one of only a handful of coaches to receive such recognition multiple times.

Andrew Berry reflected on the difficult decision to move forward without Stefanski, recognizing the emotional weight of the change. He praised Stefanski’s authentic leadership and his relationships within the organization, remarking on the unique challenges faced during his tenure. Moreover, Berry addressed the team’s future direction, stressing the importance of nurturing young talent while also reinforcing the existing young defense, which has shown promise.

At the end of the 2025 season, the Browns finished with a 5-12 record, leaving Stefanski with an overall record of 45-56. In his farewell statement, Stefanski conveyed heartfelt appreciation for his experience in Cleveland. He recognized the support he received from the community and vowed to cherish the time spent with the coaching staff and players, alluding to the challenges they overcame together.

As the Browns shift their focus to finding a new head coach, they aim to build a strategy around an emerging team. The search promises to be a pivotal moment for the organization as it looks to revitalize its prospects and deliver on the aspirations of its dedicated fan base.
