Los Angeles, California — A powerful storm system, identified as an atmospheric river, unleashed heavy rain across Southern California on Saturday, leading to widespread flood warnings, particularly in areas recently impacted by wildfires. The National Weather Service reported rainfall rates topping an inch per hour in coastal regions, heightening concerns of flash floods.

The storm made landfall after saturating areas in Santa Barbara County a day earlier, where more than four inches of rain had fallen. As the storm approached Los Angeles, authorities advised residents to remain indoors as strong winds accompanied the downpour.

Originating from a plume of tropical moisture over the Pacific Ocean, the storm first affected the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday before sweeping southward. Forecasts suggested that parts of the Sierra Nevada could see more than a foot of snow as the atmospheric river moved through the region.

Tragically, the storm’s impact has already resulted in loss of life. A 71-year-old man died when his vehicle was swept off a flooded bridge in Northern California. Additionally, a five-year-old child was swept off a beach by towering 15-foot waves along the Central Coast, prompting a search operation.

In a separate incident off the Southern California coast, a wooden boat believed to be transporting migrants capsized amid treacherous conditions. The Coast Guard confirmed that at least four individuals perished, and four others were hospitalized as a result of the incident.

Flood advisories extended from Malibu to the Ventura County coast, with Los Angeles officials stressing the importance of precautionary measures. “We urge residents in burn scar areas to remain vigilant due to the risk of debris flows,” said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in an update. An Evacuation Warning remains in effect for areas surrounding recent wildfires, with some properties under mandatory evacuation orders.

Authorities are actively visiting high-risk locations, including parts of the Palisades and Eaton fire burn areas, to encourage evacuations. The weather conditions have posed significant challenges, leading local officials to prioritize safety as the storm continues to wreak havoc across the region.
