Palmyra, Syria — British Royal Air Force Typhoon jets collaborated with French aircraft over the weekend to target an underground weapons cache associated with the Islamic State group. The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that careful intelligence assessments indicated the facility, located in the mountains near Palmyra, was being used to store arms and explosives.

During the operation, RAF aircraft deployed Paveway IV guided bombs specifically aimed at access tunnels leading to the facility. Initial reports suggest the strikes were successful, with no civilian casualties and all aircraft returning safely to base after the mission.

Further evaluations of the operation are ongoing, but early indications point to the effectiveness of the engagement. The mission marked a continuation of efforts to prevent the resurgence of IS, which had controlled significant territories in Syria and Iraq before its defeat in 2019.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refueling tanker, underscoring the coordinated nature of this strike. Defence Secretary John Healey praised the operation, emphasizing the UK’s commitment to collaborating with allies to combat terrorist threats in the region.

This latest strike highlights broader concerns regarding IS, which the United Nations estimates still has a force of 5,000 to 7,000 fighters remaining in Syria and Iraq. The ministry noted that RAF patrols over Syria have been ongoing since IS’s territorial defeat, aimed at staving off any attempts at re-establishment.

Healey expressed gratitude toward the members of the armed forces involved, commending their professionalism during the operation. He noted that many British military personnel have been deployed throughout the holiday season, emphasizing their dedication to protecting both national security and international stability.

The coalition against IS continues to adapt to the evolving landscape, with recent developments including Syria joining the US-led coalition last month. The aim remains focused on dismantling remaining elements of IS and stopping the inflow of foreign fighters into the region.
