Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica — The recent death of a Californian surfing figure is prompting serious concerns among family and local residents who believe the circumstances of the killing may go well beyond an apparent robbery. Kurt Van Dyke, age 66, was discovered deceased in his home over the weekend, and details surrounding the crime have ignited questions among those close to him.
Peter Van Dyke, Kurt’s brother, spoke out Monday, highlighting the troubling nature of the incident. His brother’s body was reportedly Hidden beneath a bed, exhibiting multiple stab wounds and signs of asphyxiation. Local authorities, who are investigating the case, noted evidence of violent intrusion, including the zip-tying and assault of Kurt’s girlfriend, identified only as Arroyo.
Arroyo was in a shower when the attackers entered the residence, reportedly forcing both her and Kurt into a room at gunpoint before fleeing with valuables, including their vehicle. Thankfully, Arroyo did not sustain serious injuries. However, Peter expressed a sense of foreboding regarding the circumstances of his brother’s death. He recounted their last conversation just days prior, where Kurt appeared to be in good spirits, raising questions about the motives behind the brutal act.
Peter articulated his belief that the killing was not an ordinary robbery gone wrong, mentioning that his brother garnered mixed feelings from members of the local community. “There were people in the area who did not like him,” he said, hinting at deeper issues possibly linked to Kurt’s long-standing business engagements in the region since the mid-1980s.
Kurt, who owned a modest hotel in Puerto Viejo and was renowned for his surfing skills, had established roots in Costa Rica. His reputation stretched back to his youth in California, where he was part of a pioneering surf family. His father and mother were influential figures in the surfing community, which contributed to Kurt’s passion for the sport.
As the investigation continues, Peter Van Dyke has been in communication with the U.S. Embassy regarding his brother’s remains, emphasizing the family’s connections to the broader Californian community. He expressed frustration over the lack of information released by local law enforcement and noted that violence rates in Costa Rica have escalated in recent years.
The shocking incident has reverberated throughout the usually tranquil coastal town, stirring unease among residents. Roger Sams, president of the Southern Caribbean Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, expressed his sorrow over the event, noting that the region had enjoyed a reputation for safety prior to this incident.
As investigations proceed, the Van Dyke family is left grappling with the unexpected loss while community members reflect on the changing climate of safety and security in their once-peaceful locale.
