CAMP LEJEUNE, NC – A tragic incident unfolded at a North Carolina Marine base, Camp Lejeune, on Wednesday evening. A Marine is suspected of committing a homicide in a barracks room, leading to the death of a fellow Marine. The suspect was apprehended later that night, according to the base’s official statement.
The identities of the involved Marines, the cause of death, and the circumstances surrounding the incident have not been disclosed at this time. The base authorities are withholding further details pending an ongoing investigation.
Camp Lejeune, located in Onslow County, North Carolina, was in the midst of conducting Exercise Urgent Response, an annual security procedure development and training event, from October 20 to 28. The incident, however, is not believed to be connected to this exercise.
Established in 1941, Camp Lejeune has a rich history and is known as the home of “expeditionary forces in readiness.” It serves as the base for the II Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, and other combat units and support commands. The base also hosts several major Marine Corps commands and a Navy command.
The base, which spans about 240 square miles and includes 14 miles of beach along the Atlantic Ocean, is used for a variety of training exercises. These include amphibious assaults and urban warfare training for U.S. Marines, as well as exercises involving military forces from around the world.
