Caplan-Auerbach became aware of the Swift Quake after a user on a Facebook page about Pacific Northwest earthquakes inquired about the concert’s “quake factor.” Analyzing data recorded by a seismometer, she confirmed that the Taylor Swift concerts did indeed produce a seismic event, but with greater intensity and duration than the original Beast Quake caused by football fans. While the hours-long shaking had no negative impact on the Earth itself, it presents an opportunity to enhance our understanding of earthquakes.
Studying events like the Swift Quake can provide insights into how buildings and the subsurface respond to shaking during earthquakes. This knowledge is crucial for designing resilient structures. Although seismic events caused by concerts or sporting events have not been extensively examined, it is possible that similar phenomena have occurred elsewhere but have gone unnoticed due to the lack of seismometers near arenas and stadiums, and the lack of scientific interest in this specific area of research.
Caplan-Auerbach expressed excitement about the increased interest in seismology and geology as a result of the Swift Quake. She emphasized the importance of demystifying the scientific process and acknowledged the valuable contribution of ordinary individuals in making observations and collecting data, which she considers to be an essential part of scientific inquiry.
Moving forward, researchers aim to determine the exact cause of the seismic activity during the Swift concerts. They will examine factors such as fan movements, music genres, and loudspeakers. Swift fans who attended the Seattle concerts have been sending videos and providing valuable insights to aid the research. Engaging in this investigation has even prompted Caplan-Auerbach to consider becoming a “Swiftie” herself after listening to the concert recordings in her search for answers.
