TOKYO, Japan – In a recent report, Nintendo disclosed that it has sold a total of 139.36 million units of its Switch hardware since its launch in March 2017, as of December 31, 2023. This marks an increase from the 132.46 million units sold reported in November. As a result, the company has raised its forecasts for both hardware sales and overall profit for the year.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa announced that the current Switch model would continue to be the company’s main focus in 2024, and he refrained from commenting on any plans for new hardware. The company expects to sell 15.5 million Switch units by the end of the fiscal year, along with an additional 5 million software units. Despite a 6% decrease in overall sales year-on-year, the system continues to exceed expectations as it approaches its eighth year on the market.
Gross profit rose by 11.5% year-on-year, operating profit by 13.1%, and sales related to “mobile and IP” business increased by 93.4% due to a surge in movie-related sales and increased royalty income, according to the report.
The report also revealed that the OLED model of the Switch was the most popular among consumers, with an increased sell-through total and a high demand for first-time, additional, and replacement purchases. Additionally, the number of users who played software in 2023 reached an all-time high of over 122 million.
The report further detailed the sales figures for each variant of the Switch, and as of December 31, 2023, the total sales of each console model were as follows: DS – 154.02 million, Switch – 139.36 million, Game Boy – 118.69 million, Wii – 101.63 million, Game Boy Advance – 81.51 million, 3DS – 75.94 million, Family Computer/NES – 61.91 million, Super Family Computer/SNES – 49.10 million, N64 – 32.93 million, GameCube – 21.74 million, and Wii U – 13.56 million.
Despite ongoing speculation about a potential “Switch 2,” Nintendo has given no indication of any upcoming announcements regarding new hardware. The company’s strong performance and sustained sales figures leave fans and analysts eager for more, as they contemplate the Switch’s potential to surpass the sales figures of other iconic gaming consoles.
