Syracuse Man Sentenced to 68 Months in Prison for Fentanyl Distribution and Firearm Possession

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – Prince Smith, a 22-year-old resident of Syracuse, has been sentenced to 68 months in prison for his involvement in a fentanyl distribution and possession conspiracy. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and John B. DeVito, Special Agent in Charge of the New York Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Smith, who had previously pleaded guilty, confessed to distributing approximately 19 grams of fentanyl and using a firearm while engaging in drug distribution. On February 18, 2021, Smith was apprehended with fentanyl stored in the center console of his vehicle, along with a loaded 9mm handgun.

In addition to the prison sentence, United States District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby also ordered Smith to serve a three-year term of supervised release following his release from prison.

The investigation into Smith’s activities was carried out jointly by the ATF and the Syracuse Police Department-Criminal Intelligence Section. The case was successfully prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Sutcliffe.

Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, has been a major concern for law enforcement agencies due to its role in the opioid crisis. Its illicit distribution and use have resulted in numerous overdose deaths across the country. The successful apprehension and prosecution of individuals involved in fentanyl distribution plays a crucial role in combating this public health crisis.

The sentencing of Prince Smith serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to dismantle drug trafficking networks and hold individuals accountable for their role in perpetuating the opioid epidemic. The collaborative work between the ATF and local law enforcement authorities highlights the importance of interagency cooperation in addressing such complex criminal activities.

The case against Smith underscores the severity of consequences faced by those engaged in fentanyl distribution and the associated firearms offenses. The imposition of a substantial prison term sends a strong message that such criminal behavior will not be tolerated and underscores the commitment to protecting communities from the devastating impact of illicit drug trade.

The successful resolution of this case is a testament to the relentless efforts of law enforcement officials and prosecutors in their pursuit of justice and the safeguarding of public health and safety.
