PlayStation Studios has announced the formation of a new developer called teamLFG, which consists of experienced professionals from Bungie, the studio behind Destiny and Halo, along with talent from popular games like League of Legends, Fortnite, and Roblox. This new team is set to work on a team-based action title that aims to foster player connection and community engagement.
In 2022, Bungie underwent a significant workforce reduction, laying off approximately 220 employees, which equated to about 17% of its staff. Following this restructuring, Bungie’s CEO, Pete Parsons, indicated that one of their early-stage projects would transition to PlayStation Studios, leading to the creation of teamLFG.
The studio’s name reflects its mission—“Looking For Group”—echoing the desire to cultivate an environment where gamers can easily find companionship and shared experiences. In a statement, teamLFG expressed its goal to create engaging worlds where players can forge friendships and relive unforgettable moments together. They envision a space where players can regularly encounter familiar faces and celebrate memorable in-game performances.
Additionally, teamLFG plans to develop immersive multiplayer environments featuring rich action gameplay. They are keen to involve player communities through early access playtests, which will allow for ongoing feedback throughout development and after launch. The team emphasized the importance of staying flexible to adapt to player insights, ensuring the game’s evolution aligns with community desires.
The anticipated project is described as a lighthearted and comedic action game set in a unique science-fantasy universe. It draws inspiration from various genres including fighting games, platformers, and multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs), and even life simulation games. Early rumors suggest that this title might be connected to the previously leaked “Gummy Bears” project, hinting at a youthful appeal.
Over recent years, PlayStation has encountered challenges with live-service games. In an ambitious move, the company aimed to launch more than ten new live-service titles by March 2026. However, plans have shifted following the disappointing performance of titles like Concord and the subsequent cancellation of two other live-service games, resulting in further layoffs.
In February 2022, Sony’s acquisition of Bungie for $3.6 billion was partly driven by the strategic goal of expanding its live-service offerings. The formation of teamLFG may represent a strategic pivot, demonstrating how Sony intends to leverage Bungie’s expertise in this domain, alongside other upcoming projects such as the multiplayer shooter Marathon.
As teamLFG embarks on this endeavor, it remains to be seen how their innovative approach to community-driven gaming will resonate with players and enhance PlayStation’s portfolio in the competitive gaming landscape.
