Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A shooting near a SEPTA bus stop in Northeast Philadelphia left eight teenagers injured, marking the fourth shooting to occur on the city’s transit system within a span of four days. According to Philadelphia police commissioner Kevin Bethel, the incident unfolded when three individuals opened fire on a group of students from Northeast High School waiting at the bus stop, firing more than 30 shots.
Among the victims, a 16-year-old boy was critically wounded after being struck nine times. The remaining victims, seven teenagers in total, are reported to be in stable condition. Fortunately, despite the gunfire hitting two buses, no passengers or drivers sustained injuries during the incident.
The shooting, which took place around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Cottman and Rising Sun avenues, heightened concerns of escalating violence within the city. Authorities are urging anyone with information on the incident to contact law enforcement immediately.
City leaders, including Mayor Cherelle Parker and District Attorney Larry Krasner, convened a press conference to address the recent surge in gun violence impacting Philadelphia’s youth. Commissioner Bethel emphasized the urgent need to address the issue, stressing the importance of community involvement in curbing gun-related crimes.
