Texas man scalds disabled roommate with hot water then pours rubbing alcohol on her and lights her on fire

SAN ANTONIO, TX – A San Antonio man will spend nearly five decades behind bars after a jury convicted him of brutally assaulting his disabled roommate by dousing her with boiling water and setting her on fire, authorities said.

Kamron Kearney, 28, received a 47-year prison sentence Monday following his conviction of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, causing serious bodily injury, and injury to a disabled person. Bexar County court records indicate the offenses stemmed from a harrowing incident last fall.

Investigators say the victim, a 36-year-old woman living in the same residence as Kearney, endured a sustained attack in October 2023. According to police, the woman, who is autistic and receives disability benefits, had been living with Kearney for at least a year prior to the incident.

Responding officers were called to the home after another caregiver witnessed the attack and contacted authorities. Detectives learned that Kearney became enraged when the woman, who required assistance with daily activities, accidentally urinated on herself.

Documents detail how Kearney left the bathroom, filled several pitchers with scalding water, and poured the contents over the top of the shower stall, severely burning the woman’s neck and back. After the shower, the victim was reportedly forced to stand in a corner for an extended period, causing swelling in her legs.

The violence escalated when Kearney allegedly poured rubbing alcohol on the woman and used a match to ignite her arms, resulting in further serious burns. The flames were extinguished, but police say Kearney again doused the victim’s legs with rubbing alcohol and set them alight.

Emergency services provided treatment for extensive burns, and the woman was hospitalized for her injuries. The person who alerted authorities cooperated with investigators throughout the case.

Court documents revealed Kearney’s criminal history is marked by prior convictions for violent offenses. He had previously entered guilty or no contest pleas in three separate assault cases over the past seven years. The current victim’s involvement in those cases remains unclear.

A Bexar County jury found Kearney guilty on December 5, and his sentencing took place on Monday. Officials described the attack as particularly disturbing due to the victim’s disabilities and vulnerability.

Kearney’s 47-year sentence reflects the serious nature of the crimes, as well as the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and prosecutors to protect individuals with disabilities from abuse. He will serve his sentence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
