ARLINGTON, TX – A man is in custody following a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a pregnant woman in Arlington earlier this month, authorities confirmed.
Police arrested Malik Miner, 29, on Thursday in connection with a shooting that took place along Interstate 20, a busy highway cutting through the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Miner faces charges including first-degree murder, deadly conduct, and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
The violence unfolded on a November evening as Bre’Asia Johnson, 29, was traveling westbound toward Bowman Springs Road. According to investigators, Johnson was in the front passenger seat of a car driven by her boyfriend, with two children also inside the vehicle, when gunfire erupted.
The vehicle veered off the interstate, pulling into a QuikTrip gas station to seek help. Both Johnson and her boyfriend were struck by bullets, and first responders pronounced Johnson dead at the scene just before 8 p.m., police reported. Johnson’s boyfriend was hospitalized for his injuries, while the two children were largely unharmed aside from one suffering minor cuts from broken glass.
Authorities later determined Johnson was pregnant at the time of the shooting, and the unborn child also died as a result. The investigation revealed that a second, unrelated car was hit by the gunfire, but those occupants escaped injury.
Officers combing the highway found shell casings from two different firearms, indicating multiple weapons were involved. As the investigation continued, detectives pieced together evidence through witness interviews and surveillance footage, ultimately identifying Miner as the suspect.
Officials emphasized that the shooting was not a random act of road rage. Instead, they believe Miner intentionally targeted the victims, fueled by an ongoing conflict involving a past romantic relationship with Johnson and a dispute with her current boyfriend. The police said Miner had previously dated Johnson and had been feuding with her partner.
A search warrant executed at Miner’s home led to the seizure of his cellphone, which was later analyzed by investigators. Digital records revealed communication between Miner and Johnson’s boyfriend in the days before the shooting. Additionally, detectives used cellphone location data to place Miner at the scene at the time of the shooting and indicated his movements closely matched those of the victims leading up to the incident.
According to police, the cellphone evidence suggests Miner followed the vehicle carrying Johnson and her boyfriend before opening fire.
After his arrest, authorities said Miner declined to give a statement regarding the shooting. He remains in custody as the investigation continues, and police have not indicated if further charges may be filed.
