Thief Steals $2,000 Fundraiser Money for Monterey Park Shooting Survivors From Donut Shop Trunk

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – Money raised for the survivors of a deadly shooting at a dance hall in Monterey Park was stolen from a car parked outside a donut shop in the San Gabriel Valley.

Security camera footage from early Tuesday morning outside Arcadia Donuts shows a thief breaking a car window and opening its trunk to steal a bag containing a laptop and $2,000 collected at a bakery’s weekend fundraiser. The burglar then quickly disappeared into the darkness.

The car belonged to the shop owner, who suspects that the thief may have targeted the vehicle after staking out the business. Francois Ung, the owner, expressed his distress, saying, “I looked up at the camera and I see someone running. Something is wrong. So I ran to the car, and I saw that (the window) is broken.”

The stolen money was raised for the MPK Hope Resiliency Center, where Ung’s wife Shally meets with a therapist. Shally was present at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio on the night of January 21, 2023, when a gunman opened fire, resulting in the death of 11 people and injuries to nine others who were gathered for a Lunar New Year celebration.

One of the victims, Shally’s 72-year-old dance partner, shielded her from the gunfire. His portrait, along with the images of the other victims, holds a prominent place at the donut shop. Francois expressed the significance of the fundraiser, stating, “We wanted to do this fundraiser to remember Andy and the other 10 people who passed away. Andy was a good friend of ours.”

The fundraiser was a way for the community to come together in support of the survivors and the victims’ families. The unfortunate theft of the funds adds to the emotional toll already experienced by those impacted by the tragic shooting incident.
