Thursday Night Showdown: Chargers vs. Broncos Flexed to Primetime in Historic First Move

Los Angeles, California – The Los Angeles Chargers have secured another prime-time slot due to their impressive performance on the field. Quarterback Justin Herbert and the Chargers were originally scheduled to play the Denver Broncos on Sunday, December 22nd, but the game has been flexed to Thursday night, December 19th. This marks the first time a game has been rescheduled to the Thursday night spot.

Last season, the NFL modified its policy to allow Thursday night games in Weeks 13 through 17 to be flexed with sufficient notice. With this new change, teams can make more than one appearance on Amazon Prime Video’s 16-game package, with only two flexed games allowed per season within the five-week window. The upcoming matchup between the Chargers and Broncos is crucial as both teams are vying for playoff spots in the AFC West division.

Despite the hiring of coach Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers were initially excluded from Thursday night games when the NFL schedule was released earlier in the year. This season, it will be the second time the Chargers have been featured in prime time, following their recent victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on “Sunday Night Football.”

Los Angeles, currently boasting a 7-3 record and on a four-game winning streak, will face off against the Baltimore Ravens this week on “Monday Night Football.” This game will mark the third coaching matchup between brothers John and Jim Harbaugh. Additionally, the Chargers’ game against the Kansas City Chiefs on December 8th is also slated for Sunday night.

On the other hand, the Denver Broncos, with a 6-5 record, had a successful Thursday night game earlier in the season against the New Orleans Saints. They will have a Monday night matchup against the Cleveland Browns on December 2nd. Notably, the Chargers previously defeated the Broncos 23-16 in Denver, where Harbaugh had to briefly leave the field due to a health concern.
